Europe and Central Asia
The European and Central Asian region comprises 51 countries, of which 28 are European Union (EU) Member States. The EU regional integration process continued to play a major role in the region, and has brought opportunities such as the development of the ILO-EU partnership, which aims for results both within and outside the EU. New donors are emerging in the region with a desire to broaden partnerships.
The financial and economic crisis, with its negative impact on the labour market and social situation in Europe and Central Asia, has led to the ILO’s stepping up its work in the region. While some countries are successfully recovering from the crisis, with stable or improving labour markets, the most severely affected countries, many of them with advanced economies, have seen unemployment rise to unprecedented levels, particularly for young men and women.
